When we offer our customers a quality pair of socks we envision that they are going to be worn by humans. Whether they are socks to keep your feet warm, comfortable, protected or fashionable, we hope our socks make a little positive difference. But we haven’t considered them being chewed or eaten by a dog.
Socks don’t spell out ‘tasty treat’ to me. So, initially we didn’t understand why dogs like to chew socks. They don’t smell or look appetising, they are not part of a dogs daily diet and they aren’t usually put in their dog bowl! But there are quite a few reasons as to why dogs chew on your socks.
1. They are attention seeking
Dogs can be pretty clever animals, if it is your dog then they will know exactly how to push your buttons. Stealing your socks is a way of grabbing your attention. If they are a puppy then they desperately want you to play. It wouldn’t matter too much if they chew on socks, underwear or even your bra, they know that they’ll get a reaction. Don’t just ask why do dogs eat your socks, they’ll eat your underwear and your bra’s as well.
2. They are bored
If your dog has over played with the toys that you have given them or they simply just don’t have enough then they might choose your socks. Its not your socks in particular, they were just… there. You probably left them on the floor and it looked like the most appealing thing at the time.
3. Scent
Socks that have been worn all day can give off the cheesiest smell imaginable, and not in the pleasant sense. So why do dogs eat your socks? It could be because it smells of you. The fact that an item smells of you comfort your dog if it is close to him especially if it is in his mouth. So, if you think your dog is trying to irritate you then you’re probably wrong, in fact he’s probably telling you he really likes you.
4.Stressed
It could also mean that he is stressed. As reiterated above, your scent can comfort your dog. So, if you find yourself going out the house quite a lot then he’ll start to miss you. Chewing on your socks helps him and comforts him.
5. They’re just being dogs
Dogs have it built in their DNA to retrieve, that’s why they love playing fetch with a tennis ball. If your dog is going into your bedroom and nicking your socks it could be attention seeking, showing off your socks in his mouth like a trophy. Or, it could be that he is designed to go and hunt for items. Your dog will use his nose to find these items and as you guessed your socks are probably the smelliest item there is. So don’t blame your dog for stealing your socks, it’s in their blood to do so.
